Abstract

840,809. Discharge lamps; luminescent materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 10, 1957 [Jan. 10, 1957], No. 1025/57. Class 39(1). A H.P. mercury vapour discharge lamp has a quartz discharge envelope 1 surrounded by a glass jacket 6 the inner surface of which is coated with a fluorescent material 12 consisting only of calcium orthosilicate or a calcium strontium orthosilicate activated by lead and manganese so as to be excitable by U.V. radiation of 2537‹A wave length, the jacket 6 being so small that in normal operation of the lamp the temperature attained by all or the greater part of the fluorescent material exceeds 250‹C. The jacket 6 can be of a generally ovoidal or cylindrical shape in which the tubular envelope 1 is supported coaxially and approximately centrally from the outer jacket. The filling of the envelope can include argon and metals such as cadmium or zinc besides mercury. The jacket 6 is filled with nitrogen at a pressure of about 200 mms. The electrodes 3 are of the activated tungsten-rod type each connected to one end of a molybdenum strip 4 embedded in a pinch 2. The envelope 1 is supported in the jacket 6 by a framework extending between the neck 9 and a recess 11 at the other end of the jacket, and the framework can carry a resistor through which an auxiliary electrode, associated with one electrode 3, is connected to the other elecelectrode 3. Dimensions of the envelope and jacket are stated. Known luminescent materials -zinc sulphide, zinc cadmium sulphide, barium strontium lithium silicate activated by cerium and manganese, magnesium arsenate activated by manganese and magnesium fluoro-germanate activated by manganese-are referred to.
