Abstract

Carbon monoxide and/or dioxide present in hydrogen is converted into methane by passage of the hydrogen over a catalyst consisting of 0.01-2.0 per cent of ruthenium or rhodium on activated alumina, chromia or zirconia, at a temperature of at least 120 DEG C. The catalyst preferably consists of 0.1-0.5 per cent of ruthenium on activated alumina. The examples specify the treatment of hydrogen containing 0.03-4.0 per cent of carbon monoxide and 4 per cent of carbon dioxide and the use of temperatures up to 420 DEG C.ALSO:Carbon monoxide and/or dioxide present in admixture with hydrogen is converted into methane by passage of the mixture over a catalyst consisting of 0.01-2.0 per cent of ruthenium or rhodium on activated alumina, chromia or zirconia, at a temperature of at least 120 DEG C. The catalyst preferably consists of 0.1-0.5 per cent of ruthenium on activated alumina. The examples specify the treatment of commercial hydrogen containing 0.03-4.0 per cent of carbon monoxide and 4 per cent of carbon dioxide and of a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide containing 27 per cent of carbon monoxide, and the use of temperatures up to 420 DEG C.
