Abstract
802,892. Discharge lamps. RAULAND CORPORATION. April 17,1956, No. 11619/56. Class 39(1). Arc lamp comprises a pair of coaxial tungsten electrodes 11, 12 supported in variable spaced relationship, an opaque shield structure 18, 17, 20 encompassing the electrodes and having an unobstructed light exposure aperture 29 and means, comprising gas supply tank 32, regulating valve 34, pipe 33 and aperture 30, for producing a continuous substantially constant flow of inert gas, such as helium or argon under pressure of 2-3 lbs. per sq. inch, through the discharge space. The shield structure comprises a ceramic or stainless steel tube 18 closed by stainless steel end caps 17 and 20 carrying the electrodes. One or both end caps 17, 20 can be separated from the tube 18 by insulating sleeves 19. The electrodes 11, 12 are mounted in the end caps 17, 20 by threaded ferrules 13, 21 of brass or iron and nuts 15, 23. Connectors 27, 25 to the supply source 26 are clamped between the ferrules 13, 21 and the caps 17, 20. The spacing between the electrodes 11 and 12 can be adjusted by moving them within the ferrules 13 and 21 and can be 0À1 inch or less. Electrodes of different diameter can be used. The light intensity can be varied by adjustment of the current from the supply source 26 which can incorporate current limiting means. An operating current of 45 amperes is referred to.
