A washing-machine consisting of a tub 3 inside which a basket 2 is mounted that can be rotated rapidly for spin drying, has a trap 24 for heavy, insoluble dirt particles fitted beneath the flared skirt part 8 of agitator 6, the agitator and basket being driven by electric motor 12. The trap consists of a cylindrical recess in the bottom of basket 2 and the top is formed by an inwardly inclined annular plate with its outer edge resting on a peripheral ledge 28 projecting inwards from the side wall of the trap. During the washing cycle of the machine, heavy insoluble dirt particles settle to the bottom of the basket 2 and fall beneath part 8 which shields the portion immediately below it from turbulence created by vanes 7. The dirt particles pass down the inwardly inclined annular top plate of trap 24 and are carried, in a stream of liquid, through holes 29 into trap 24 and from there down the outwardly inclined bottom plate of the trap, through holes 32, into the tube 3 where they settle out. Wash liquid is re-circulated to the basket through pipe 21 by pump 19 driven by motor 12. When the washing and rinsing operations are complete, basket 2 is rotated rapidly and water removed from the articles by the centrifuging action, flows rapidly into tube 3 and is pumped to waste through pipe 23 carrying the heavy dirt particles with it.
