Abstract
779,271. Fluid pressure hammers. BELL, N. G. Sept. 19, 1955 [Sept. 20, 1954], No. 27163/54. Class 122 (3). [Also in Group XXI] In a pile-driving hammer comprising a stationary piston 1 and hollow piston-rod 2 about which a cylinder 3 reciprocates, the rotary valve 6 putting the space 16 into communication with fluid pressure 14 or exhaust 19 is carried on the top of the piston-rod within the crosshead of the stationary cradle 4. The valve is actuated by cams on a cam rod on the cylinder 3. A port 13 in the cylinder passes the top of the piston driving the upstroke at the time that the valve 6 is moved to exhaust. A port 20 prevents air being trapped below the piston and allows discharge of condensate when steam is the pressure fluid. For double-acting operation the port 20 is closed and an additional drainage port 21 is closed by a plunger 22 under steam pressure through duct 23, a spring 24 opening the valve 22 when steam is cut off.
