Abstract

738,486. Door-operating apparatus; hinges. MACDOWALL, R. R. S. CHARTERIS-. April 1, 1953 [Jan. 2, 1952], No. 182/52. Classes 65(1) and 65(2). [Also in Group XXXII] A support for a door or window for example, a door 1, Fig. 3, of a vehicle, comprises in combination an arm 6 hinged to the framing of the door aperture, a member 10 pivotally carried at the free end of the arm 6, a guide 11 secured to the door and slidably mounted on the member 10 and an intermediate member 13 carrying anti-friction members and located between the member 10 and the guide 11, the arrangement being such that the door may be disengaged partly or completely by pivotal movement of the arm 6 and then moved clear of the door aperture by displacement of the guide 11 relative to the member 10. As shown, the door 1 is mounted on the bodywork of the vehicle by upper and lower supporting means each comprising a bracket 3 housed in a recess in a post 5. The bracket carries rotatably a hinge pin 7 to which is fixed the arm 6 provided with a pin 8. The pin carries a rotatably-mounted boss 9 secured to the channel-shaped member 10. The guide 11, Fig. 4, is slidably mounted on the member 10 with the interposition of the member 13 and balls 12. The guide is fixed to the inner face of the car door. The hinge pins 7, Fig. 3, are connected by a tube 7a on which is mounted a helical spring 15 so that it acts to urge the door when unlatched away from the framing of the door opening. The door can then be slid to one side so that the door opening is completely unobstructed. Means may be provided at the bottom of the door to prevent undue swinging movement about the pins 8 when the door is disengaged from the opening, such means comprising a bracket 17, Fig. 5, fixed to the door and carrying an arm 18 connected to a plate 19 with three rollers 20 slidably engaging a guide member 21. The member 10, Fig. 3, when the door is closed, may be covered by a tape located in a framework over the guide 11 and attached at one end to a pivot boss 9, the tape being rolled up on a housing when the door is opened.
