Abstract
734,359. Motor power plant; jet propulsion plant. MAYES, H. R. Dec. 1, 1953 [Dec. 1, 1952], No. 30401/52. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXVII] In a motor power plant including an internalcombustion engine with two or more cylinders 1 disposed parallel to and spaced equally around the drive shaft 5, the pistons 2 actuating cranks 4 connected to the shaft 5 to transmit power thereto, a turbine wheel 13 is fixed to or connected by gearing with the shaft 5 and arranged concentrically with said shaft to be driven by the exhaust gases from the cylinders 1 so as to impart power to the shaft 5. As shown the cranks 4 are geared to a common gear wheel 6 on the shaft 5 which drives an air screw 10 and the power plant, arranged inside a cowling 11, exhausts through a jet orifice 15. The engine has four cylinders 1 arranged 90 degrees apart around the shaft 5 and rotary valves 14 for the cylinders are driven by a gear wheel 8 on the shaft 5, the pistons of each pair of diametrically opposite cylinders being arranged to work in the same phase. A fly wheel 16 and cooling fan or supercharging compressor 12 may also be provided on the shaft 5. Each cylinder 1 may be arranged to contain two pistons connected to the same crank 4, all of the cranks being geared to the same gear wheel 6, and this bank of cylinders may be duplicated to form a sixteencylinder engine, each bank of cylinders being geared to a separate wheel 6 on the shaft 5. Alternatively each cylinder 1 may contain opposed pistons acting on separate cranks and similar arrangements are possible in an engine having six cylinders 60 degrees apart in each bank.
