Abstract

Regulating.-A steam, air, or internal-combustion engine for air-craft, &c. is provided with groups of cylinders 1, 2, 3 arranged in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the crank-shaft. The cylinders are provided with valves 17, 18 so that they may all be connected ; or the lateral cylinders 1, 3 may be thrown out of action should they get out of order. The cylinders, in the case of a gas engine, are provided with common fuel inlet and exhaust valves 11, 12. actuated by cam disks on countershafts 15, 16 through rods and bell-cranks. In this construction, the engine works on a two-stroke, four-stroke, or six-stroke cycle. In a modification with four cylinders in a group wherein the cylinders are connected in pairs, the central cylinders are provided with inlet or exhaust valves and the outside cylinders with exhaust or inlet valves, and two auxiliary crank-shafts are used. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the cranks on shafts 42, 43 are out of parallel so that the charge in cylinder 41 is compressed and ignited somewhat earlier than the charge in the cylinder 40.
