Abstract
688,683. Metal heating furnaces. WELLMAN SMITH OWEN ENGINEERING CORPORATION, Ltd. March 24, 1950 [March 24, 1949], No. 8121/49. Class 51 (ii). A continuous heat treatment furnace for steel ingots comprises a heating chamber 3 fired by oppositely disposed gas burners 15, a preheating section 2 with waste gas exhaust ports 16 at either end, and a soaking pit 4 fired by burners 12 in the end wall 13 with waste gas exhaust ports 14 disposed below the burners, the exhaust ports 14 and 16 being equipped with dampers to vary the heating cycle. The soaking pit has a removable cover 10 actuated by conventional operating mechanism 11 and conventional watercooled skids 5 and ingot pusher mechanism 19 are provided. The soaking pit hearth 7 is below the level of the skids 5 and ingots 18 falling thereon are stood on end by a crane.
