Abstract
<PICT:0682394/III/1> <PICT:0682394/III/2> Volatiles are stripped from a liquid such as a fatty oil by separately feeding the liquid and a gaseous stripping medium such as steam into the base of a tower having a number of liquid/vapour contact zones, passing the liquid and stripping medium up the tower from zone to zone and separately removing the stripped liquid and striping medium with volatiles from the top of the tower. In Fig. 5, fatty oils introduced at 18 into the tower 10 are passed upwardly from plate to plate 15 by steam injectors 20, 22 fed with steam from line 24, while stripping steam is introduced at 26. The tower is exhausted at the top by steam injector 11, steam and vapours passing out of the tower at 13. Stripped liquid is removed at 27 from the top plate 15. As shown, part of the stripping steam and vapours may be removed at an intermediate point 32 in the column by injector 31, operated by the supply of stripping steam, and returned to the base of the tower. In a further arrangement, Fig. 4, liquid is heated in its passage upwards, the risers 23 from plate to plate 15 being taken outside the column and surrounded by heating jackets 28. Other gases or vapours, e.g. diphenyl or diphenyl oxide, may be used instead of steam as the stripping medium.
