Abstract
Coal tar pitch is treated by being mixed at elevated temperature with a petroleum fraction or solvent extract boiling in the range 250 DEG to 450 DEG C., e.g. a furfurol extract, the undissolved sediment being separated from the mixture and, if desired, the solution remaining being distilled. The mixture may be heated in stages (temperatures of 180 DEG to 380 DEG C. are mentioned) with intermediate and final cooling, and separation may likewise proceed in stages. The solution is distilled and preferably cracked at temperatures up to 450 DEG C. to produce unspecified ores, a coke-like residue remaining. Distillation is at atmospheric pressure and may be carried out in different temperature stages. The sediment from the separation stage may be extracted, e.g. with petroleum fractions and extracts, the solutions obtained may be distilled and the insoluble components removed from the solution. Four specific examples are described, and in one a mixture of pitch and extract after heating to 180 DEG C. and cooling is mixed with a heavy fuel oil, reheated and cooled, before separation.
