Abstract
673,670. Dentifrice: chewing gum. STEVENS, A. H. (Roerig & Co., J. B.). May 11, 1949, No. 12558/49. Class 81 (i). A dentifrice comprises a mixture that is substantially moisture free but that is capable of reacting with moisture in the mouth to liberate ammonia, said mixture containing urea, urease or a urease-containing substance and a carrier therefor compatible with the urea-urease function of liberating ammonia in the presence of moisture, said urea being present in an amount not over 30 per cent by weight of the mixture. The dentifrice comprises 10 to 30 per cent urea, 0.0006-0.0024 per cent urease, and 70 to 90 per cent tooth cleansing powder such as calcium, magnesium or sodium carbonate and bentonite, together with sweetening agents such as saccharin, and flavouring agents such as oil of peppermint and menthol. Citrates or acetates may be present to buffer the preparation at pH 7. The urease-containing substance may be jack bean meal, watermelon seed meal or soyabean meal. The urea/urease mixture may be incorporated in a non-hydrous gum vehicle as a chewing gum.
