Abstract

676,619. Dentifrice. ILLINOIS FOUNDATION, UNIVERSITY OF. Dec. 22, 1947 [Jan. 9, 1947], No. 33789/47. Class 81 (i). A dentifrice adapted for oral application comprises an inert non-sugary carrier and as an essential ingredient at least 1 per cent of a non- toxic, non-acid salt of ammonia. Urea may also be present, the amount of urea being not substantially greater than the amount of ammonium salt, and the ammonium salt being not substantially greater than three times the amount of urea. The urea should not exceed 10 per cent, and the non-acid salt of ammonia 7 per cent, of the dentifrice. A preferred composition comprises 3 per cent urea and 5 per cent dibasic ammonium phosphate. The urea and non-acid salt of ammonia may be in the proportions of 1:1 and 10:1. Ammonium carbonate may be used in place of the dibasic ammonium phosphate and other amides in place of the urea. The dentifrice may take the form of a tooth powder, mouth wash, lozenge, chewing gum and the like, specific examples being given of a tooth powder and mouth wash containing, in addition to the active ingredients, flavouring and other suitable ingredients.
