Abstract
652,732. Automatic control systems for dynamo-electric machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 6, 1946, No. 36196. Convention date, April 16, 1943. [Class 38 (iv)] In apparatus for regulating an output characteristic of a dynamo-electric machine excited by an amplidyne generator, a first control winding of the latter is energized to produce a field dependent on the output characteristic, a second winding produces a steady field of opposite polarity and a third winding is energized by a sensitive auxiliary regulator responsive to the difference between a constant voltage and a voltage proportional to the output characteristic, to produce an exciting field giving a precision control of the output. The field 2 of an alternator 1 (Fig. 1) is energized by an exciter 3 whose field is in turn energized by an amplidyne 6 excited differentially by windings 14, 15 energized respectively by a constant voltage source 17 and by a rectified voltage proportional to the alternator output voltage, to give coarse rapid control of the latter. An auxiliary amplidyne field winding 16 is energized from the voltage source 17 through a slow accurate low-power regulator 21 responsive to the alternator output voltage, which is rapidly and precisely controlled by the combination of the main and auxiliary regulating systems. In a modification (Fig. 2) the output current of a D.C. generator 22 is controlled by energizing its field 23 from an amplidyne controlled by a winding 28 connected across an inductive resistance 29 in series with the generator output and shunting the primary amplidyne brushes as described in Specification 644,619. A further control winding 26 is fed from a'constant voltage source 27 in series with a negative booster 39 excited by a control winding 32 energized by an auxiliary highsensitivity regulator 33 responsive to the difference between the constant voltage from source 27 and a voltage across the resistance 34 in the load circuit of generator 22. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the output of the D.C. generator is controlled according to a complex characteristic, and the booster is excited through parallel potentiometer and rectifier arms controlled by precision voltage, current, and power regulators. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
