651,888. Automatic power factor control systems ; exciting dynamo-electric machines. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. May 13, 1948, No. 13167. Convention date, May 28, 1947. [Classes 35 and 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] The power factor of a circuit is maintained constant by a synchronous motor, the excitation of which is controlled by a series wound exciter operating on the unstable part of its characteristic. The output of a potential transformer 17 is connected across a reactor 18 and across two rectifier bridges 11, 12. The common terminal of the bridges is connected to a tapping on the reactor 18 via a resistor 20 across which is applied a voltage proportional to the line current. A change in the power factor unbalances the voltages across the rectifier 11, 12 thereby unbalancing the opposed control fields 9, 10 of the series wound subexciter 7, the load on which is adjusted by a resistor 8 so that the generator 7 is operating over the unstable portion of the characteristic. Hence the small variations in control field result in a large change in the excitation of the synchronous motor 1. Specification 629,586 is referred to.
