Abstract

646,384. Exhaust silencers. SMITH, E. July 22, 1947, No. 19560. [Class 7(ii)] An exhaust silencer comprises a casing a with a series of baffles b, d, f, g having central coned portions b<SP>1</SP>, d<SP>1</SP>, f<SP>1</SP>, g<SP>1</SP>, the outlets b<SP>2</SP>-g<SP>2</SP> of which increase in diameter from the inlet to the outlet end of the casing, and a series of angularly spaced Venturi passages c surrounds the cone portions b<SP>1</SP>, d<SP>1</SP>, f<SP>1</SP>. Air is drawn in through perforations i and heated in passing through a tube h surrounding the casing a, the cone g<SP>1</SP> acting as an injector to draw the air through holes j. The silencer is connected to a fishtail outlet m in which is located a plate n with passages n<SP>1</SP> each surrounded by a short tube p with orifices p<SP>1</SP> through which air, entering through orifices m<SP>1</SP>, is drawn by the action of the gases flowing through the passages n<SP>1</SP>.
