645,149. Reciprocating pumps. TURNBULL, F. M., and HAMILTON, W. F. Dec. 23 1947, No. 33982. Convention date, Aug. 11, 1945. [Class 102(i)] [Also in Group VI] A device for projecting a jet of liquid and particularly adapted for medication purposes comprises a head having an orifice aligned with the longitudinal axis of said head for directing a thin stream of liquid, a container for holding a body of said liquid and having a longitudinal axis in substantial alignment with the axis. of said lead and orifice, and a liquid pump comprising a barrel entirely within said container and a spring-controlled plunger working within said barrel for withdrawing liquid from said container and forcing a volume of said liquid under pressure through said orifice, said barrel having a flange at its upper end integral therewith for centreing the' barrel within the container. As shown in Fig. 6, a nasal syringe comprises a container 12 fitted with a reciprocating pump formed by an actuating member 68, a pump barrel 50 and valve elements 90, 58. The pump assembly is held on the container by screwed collar 48, a washer 53 being interposed between a flange 51 on the barrel 50 and the rim of the container: the rim of the container has a grooved surface so as to permit a slow leakage of air to equalize pressures inside and outside the container. The length of stroke of the member 68 and hence the amount discharged can be determined during manufacture by selecting an upper member 86 of appropriate length. In a modification, Fig. 10. the ball 90 is replaced by a spring- pressed conical member 100.
