Abstract

607,559. Spring forks. THORNTON, A. C. Feb. 8, 1946, No. 3979. [Class 136 (iii)] A front suspension system for motor cycles wherein the front forks are connected to the main frame by upper and lower pivoted links, has the main spring in the form of a torsion bar or bars placed transversely to the machine between one or both of the links and the frame. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the upper links 1 are connected to the forks and to the inner ends of the torsion bars 2 which are mounted on the head 5 in tubes 4 which serve as handle-bars. The outer ends of the torsion bars are rigidly secured to the tubes 4 by a plug 6 and cap 7. A circular hollow drum 11 formed in the upper fork link coaxially with the inner end of the tube 4 acts as a friction damper when cooperating with friction-lined cores 12, 13 on the inner end of the tube. The drum is split and damping adjusted by a hand wheel 14. A telescopic damping spring 10 operates between the two links. The handles 8 are pivoted to clamps 9 which can be secured in any position on the tube 4.
