Abstract
605,115. Printing-machines. FANFOLD, Ltd., and MURRAY, S. M. Dec. 14, 1945, No. 33910. [Class 100(ii)] Addressing and like machines.-A rotary printing - machine comprises a printing-cylinder 1 provided with at least one carrier 9 holding a number of printing-plates, such as address-plates 5, each carrier being actuated when out of printing position to bring the plates into printing position in succession by an electrical device shown as an electromagnet 19 operated by means of a manual switch 32, an actuating-switch and an auxiliary switch, the two latter switches being engaged and disengaged by rotation of the cylinder 1 so that engagement of the actuating - switch occurs simultaneously with or during engagement of the auxiliary switch and disengagement of the auxiliary switch occurs sufficiently in advance of the disengagement of the actuating - switch to permit complete movement of the carrier 9 into a new position, operation of the manual switch enabling the operating circuit of the magnet 9 to be completed when both the actuating-switch and the auxiliary switch are engaged and the operating circuit being maintained completed until the actuating switch is disengaged by rotation of the printing-cylinder 1. The carrier 9 is rotated by a pawl carried by an arm 21 rocked periodically by engagement with a stationary cam 23, the pawl engaging a notch in a five-notch disc (for a five-plate carrier) fixed to the carrier, whenever a loose four-notch disc is rotated by a pawl carried by an arm 16 actuated by the magnet 19 to bring two notches into line. The actuating-switch comprises contacts 24 of the magnet 19 wiping over arcuate contact-strips 27a, 27b, and the auxiliary switch comprises contacts 25 which wipe over strips 26a, 26b. The effect of the latter is to energise a coil 30a operating a switch 30c to close the circuit of the former through coils 30b and 31, contacts 34, 34b closed by the switch 32, and a master switch 35. The strips 27a, 27b extend beyond the strips 26a, 26b, the angle being such as to ensure complete operation of the arm 16, since if the switch 32 is closed before the point A is reached, the action continues up to the point B, the switch being maintained closed by the coil 30b after the circuit of the coil coil 30a is opened, whereas if the switch 32 is operated between the two points there is no action. The switch 32 is retained in depressed position by a catch 33 which is released by the coil 31, a parallel circuit being simultaneously closed by engagement of an armature 31a with a contact 34a. A number of carriers 9 may be secured in adjusted positions in slots 3 in the cylinder 1, and each of a number of master switches, which may be time switches determining the number of prints, may control a group of carriers on one or more cylinders. According to the Provisional Specification, two brushes are provided instead of the pairs of contacts 24, 25, and the pawl is geared to the roller arm 21.
