Abstract
A composition for application to ferrous members which are to be heat treated in contact with each other for the manufacture of magnetic cores, the composition serving to prevent the members welding together and to react during heating to form a tenacious insulating coating, comprises a minor proportion, e.g., 2-20 per cent., of barium, beryllium, zirconium, calcium, or magnesium meta-silicate and a major proportion of magnesia. The ferrous material is preferably a silicon-iron material which is heated to 1,000-1,250 DEG C. to develop magnetic characteristics. Ordinary magnesia may be used as a basis, but if it be particularly pure 2-5 per cent. of an alkaline earth oxidizing-agent such as calcium or barium oxide may be added. The magnesia and the silicate are finely powdered and are stirred into water, acetone, or ethyl alcohol, the mixture being then applied by roll coating or spraying. The sheet material is dried at 200-300 DEG C. and is then placed in an annealing furnace at 700-1,250 DEG C. in an atmosphere of hydrogen.
