Abstract

579,076. Grinding. BOOTH, C. H., and BRIDGE, J. F. Jan. 18, 1944, No. 980. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] In a method of'machining a body of metal or other materials such as plastics by turning, planing, milling, sawing or grinding, the work is heated from a source external to the tool and applied to that localised portion of the body immediately to be removed, that is, the portion of the work which is immediately ahead of the tool, thereby facilitating the machining operation without unduly heating the parent body. In one form, Fig. 1, as applied to. a lathe, a horseshoe shaped gas heating element 18 is mounted on a pillar 23 so as to heat the work 14 immediately in front of the cutting tool 13. The pillar 23 is arranged to be traversed longitudinally at the same speed as the tool. In another form, a gas heating element is carried by a support attached to the tool spindle of a milling machine. Fig. 5 shows a planing tool 71 operating on work 70 which is heated immediately in front of the tool by means of an electric current supplied from contacts 72, 73 pressed against the surface of the work. In other forms, as applied to turning operations, the work is heated inductively from a coil immediately in front of the tool or is heated by an electric arc in front of the tool.
