Abstract
The mechanical workpiece machining system directs a plasma beam onto the surface of the workpiece immediately before the point at which the tool removes the chip from it, causing intensive local heating and thus reducing the strength of the material. The plasma beam source (2) is mounted in front of the tool (3) so that the angle between the direction of cutting and the centre line of the beam is up to 45 deg. That between the tool feed direction and this centre line is from 10 to 45 deg. Under the effect of the beam the chip is cut free by forming a groove (6) in the machined surface (4).
