[Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] An adjustable support for a dial gauge or scriber consists of a base member having inclined end face, and a holder for the gauge or scriber carried by a block rotatable relatively to the base member and bearing against the end face so that the relative rotation effects adjustment of the gauge or scriber towards or away from the base. A scribing block embodying the invention comprises a circular base block 10, Fig. 1, against which bears a circular block 11, the contacting faces of the blocks being inclined to the plane normal to the axis of the base block. A bolt 13 passes, through the blocks with clearance and is provided with a nut 17 having a cupped end 15 engaging a recess in the upper block 11. The position of a scriber 29 is finely adjusted by rotating the Mocks relatively to each other, stops 34 limiting this rotation. A stem carrier 21 passes through the block 11 and has a cylindrical head 22 surrounded by a conical sleeve 23, the scriber stem 27 fitting in the head and sleeve. The scriber stem 27 and the stem carrier 21 are secured in position by tightening a nut 28 on the carrier. The scriber 29 is attached to the stem 27 by a clamp having a cam 30 which draws together two plates 31, 32, between which the scriber 29 is held, plate 31 being carried on the tube which surrounds the stem 27. The cam 30 also operates a plunger 32a slidable in the tube to lock the tube to the stem. The scriber may when desired be carried directly by holes 37 in the stem carrier 21 and sleeve 23. Fig. 6 shows the invention applied to a stand for dial gauge 52 and comprising a base block 40 having an upper surface 42 inclined to the plane normal to the axis of the block. A pillar 44 is rotatably mounted in the base block and has secured to it a block 43 with an inclined surface 45 in which is mounted a roller 46 bearing on the base block surface 42. Rotation of the block 43 and pillar 44 thus effects vertical adjustment of the pillar and of the dial gauge 52. The gauge is carried on an arm 51, Fig. 7, passing between block 55, 58 mounted in a carrier 54 slidable on the pillar 44. A cam 59 bears on the outer block 58 to lock the arm 51 between the blocks and at the same time to lock the carrier 54 to the pillar 44. A device to assist in setting the carrier 54 on the pillar 44 comprises a sleeve 60, Fig. 8, which is locked to the pillar by turning a cam 64 to operate on a block 61 slidable in the sleeve. The cam 64 has a projection 63 which, upon continued rotation of the cam bears on the carrier 54 to adjust the position of the latter.
