[Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXV] In order to avoid excessive distortion of the wave form of the output A.C. in a magnetic amplifier in which the input is fed to a pair of D.C. windings on a saturable core so as to control the current in a pair of A.C. windings closely coupled thereto, the reactance value of the inductance in the D.C. circuit measured at the frequency of the second harmonic is made to lie between one-third and twice the value i a .e a /i d <SP>2</SP> where i a and e a are the rated current and voltage on the A.C. side and i d is the direct current corresponding to i a . Supplementary inductances associated with condensers may be provided on the D.C. side to achieve the required conditions.
