[Class 74 (ii)] An elastic fabric with a ruched appearance is produced by incorporating the elastic thread A, B at spaced points in spaced wales composed of a series of ordinary loops alternating with a series of tuck loops or float stitches, the elastic thread being incorporated in the spaced wales at the commencement of each series of loops. As described in connection with a ribbed fabric knitted upon a multi-feeder cylinder-and-dial machine, in which five dial needles are disposed between each pair of cylinder needles, the elastic thread A is fed at one feeder so that odd cylinder needles take and knit it. The even cylinder needles tuck, while the dial needles are out of action; at the second to the sixth feeder all the dial and the odd cylinder needles knit an ordinary yarn C, while the even cylinder needles tuck; at the seventh feeder the elastic thread B is fed to the needles so that odd cylinder needles tuck and the even cylinder needles knit, all the dial needles remaining out of action, and at the remaining feeders the ordinary yarn C is knitted by all the dial needles and by the even cylinder needles, while the odd cylinder needles tuck. A ruched fabric in which depressions are uniformly disposed over the whole of the fabric is obtained. In another form, the cylinder needles are divided into groups each of two needles, and the elastic forms in effect a net having a somewhat hexagonal mesh.
