Abstract

An aluminium or aluminium alloy article is shot-blasted and coated with solder, and the solder layer then shot-blasted and coated with metal. If desired, a multiplicity of alternating layers of solder and metal may thus be applied. The soldering may be effected in a conventional manner, with or without the assistance of ultrasonic vibrations. Solders which may be used are (1) those based on zinc, e.g. containing tin, cadmium, aluminium, silver or copper; (2) those based on tin, e.g. Sn 80%, Zn 20% or Sn 90%, Zn 10%; or (3) those based on lead. The metal coating is applied by flame-spraying and may consist of aluminium-bronze, 5-15% tin-bronze, plain carbon steel of up to 1% carbon, or stainless steel.
