Abstract
526,528. Electric furnace. BERGHAUS, B. March 18, 1939, No. 8740. Convention date, March 24, 1938. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In electric vacuum reaction apparatus in which heating in a vacuum chamber is effected by an electric gas discharge, a relatively long and narrow gap is provided between the lead-in conductor and a member surrounding it so as to protect the insulating and packing material between the wall of the chamber and said conductor from damage by electric discharge. The lead-in conductor and member may be as described in Specification 526,527. A reaction vessel 94, the wall of which forms a cathode, has a cover 95 held against packing 96 by clamps 103 and conductively connected to the vessel at 104. The vessel and lid have a coating 97 of suitable electrode material and also have cooling jackets 100, 118. Openings 98, 99, with filters 98a, 99a, allow connection to a vacuum pump, supply of reacting materials &c. reaction products being discharged at 121. Catalysts 106 may be suspended from a frame 107 secured to the lead-in conductor 108 which is surrounded by a spaced screening-sleeve 113 with a hollow flange 114 for circulation of cooling fluid, insulation and packing rings 110, 111, 112 being provided.
