Abstract

514,134. Cellulose ester fibres. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Nov. 21, 1938, No. 33778. Convention date, Nov. 20, 1937. [Class 2 (ii)] Staple fibres of organic esters of cellulose or filaments or yarns thereof for conversion into staple fibres, have their tendency to electrification reduced, and/or their coefficient of friction increased by treating them with saponifying agents for 6 to 14 hours at such a rate that the acidyl content of the material is not reduced by more than 2 per cent. in 8 hours treatment, washing until neutral, and subsequently treating them with an anti-static dressing, preferably that described in Specification 484,858. Saponification agents employed are: an aqueous solution of an alkylolamine, e.g. triethanolamine, non-volatile organic bases such as mono, di, or triamines, tertiary or quaternary substituted aminonias, or aqueous ammonium hydroxide. The filaments or staple fibres whilst still wet after saponification, are immersed in or sprayed with the dressing solution, and finally spun into threads or yarns. In examples: (1) Cellulose acetate fibres are saponified with an aqueous solution of ammonia for 8 hours at 28‹C., washed until neutral, and immersed in an antistatic dressing containing mineral oils, a sulphonated fatty alcohol, and a saturated solution of magnesium chloride. (2) Fibres are 'immersed in an aqueous solution of triethanolamine, withdrawn, centrifuged, and allowed to stand for 6 to 14 hours. Any residual triethanolamine is then washed out, or subsequently neutralized by oleic acid contained in the antistatic solution.
