Abstract
A pile fabric is patterned by applying light pressure locally to lay the pile and fixing with synthetic resin or a reactive aldehyde applied to the whole of the fabric. The pressure may be produced by brushing or by means of a plate, roller or the like. The fabric may be impregnated by applying the liquid to the back thereof. The fabric is preferably impregnated first and then patterned, or dried and again dampened before patterning, a heat treatment being applied last. Urea-aldehyde or phenol-aldehyde type resins are suitable. Other reagents may be added to the impregnating solution, e.g. softeners, stiffeners, waterproofing agents or rubber latex. In examples: (1) a regenerated cellulose pile fabric is impregnated with a urea - formaldehyde pre - condensate, squeezed and dried at low temperature whilst brushing; before drying is completed, the pile is pressed down locally with an engraved plate or roller, dried and heated at 170 DEG C. for 2 mins., the pattern is fixed and the fabric rendered crease-resisting; (2) a cotton back regenerated cellulose pile fabric is treated with a solution of a urea-formaldehyde pre-condensate applied to the back of the fabric by spraying or painting; the pile is brushed locally and the fabric dried and heated; (3) a regenerated cellulose pile fabric having a silk back is impregnated with a urea-formaldehyde pre-condensate and dried with brushing; the fabric is then steamed and passed over a roller having a raised pattern whereby local areas are brought into contact with a cylindrical brush rotating in the opposite direction to the travel of the fabric, which is finally dried and heated. Other examples describe the use of a phenol-formaldehyde resin, formaldehyde alone, methyl methacrylate, and also the use of a cut-out stencil to localize an all-over brushing treatment.
