Abstract

Filaments, threads, and the like of casein are produced by extruding a solution of casein into a coagulant, collecting the resulting plastic thread in a loose non-compact mass, treating it in this form with a hardening agent until substantial hardening and shrinking of the thread has been effected, and then winding the thread into a compact mass or cutting it into short lengths. The thread may be collected in a loose non-compact mass by allowing it to pass over a rotating godet and then to fall inside and near the perimeter of a vessel which contains a liquid having a hardening action on casein and which is being rotated about a vertical axis at a lower peripheral speed than the godet. Suitable solvents for casein are aqueous ammonia or sodium hydroxide, while suitable hardening agents are formaldehyde or aluminium sulphate solution. A suitable coagulating bath is one containing a mineral acid such as sulphuric acid or an organic acid such as formic acid, a salt or salts such as sodium sulphate and/or magnesium sulphate, and a hardening agent for casein.
