Abstract

493,956. Filters. CANDY, F. P. April 26, 1937, No. 11831. Addition to 437,275. [Class 46] In filters provided with a lower pipe reticulation for the distribution of up-wash water and an upper reticulation for the simultaneous supply of air, as described in the parent Specification, various arrangements are made in connection with the air-supply pipes which ensure that sand shall not choke the apertures therein or enter the pipes. As shown in Fig. 1, the air-supply pipe a in the neighbourhood of each aperture b is surrounded by a shield c of wire gauze held away from the pipe by a coil d, the ends of which are arranged to prevent the entry of sand. A rubber sleeve d, Fig. 2, cut away around the aperture b may take the place of the coil. As shown in Fig. 3, the shield c is of stiffer material and held away from the pipe a by rubber rings d. The shield c itself may in this arrangement be formed of a wire coil. Fig. 6 shows a shield c resting eccentrically on the pipe and kept in position by rubber rings e. The shield may be imperforate, the air passing out between the ends of the shield and the rings. Figures 7 and 8 show arrangements in which each aperture has a pin f extending therethrough, no shields being provided. The pipes a may have means as described in Specification 473,480 for the discharge of water collecting therein.
