Abstract

492,954. Shaft packings. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES. Feb. 8, 1938, No. 3957. Convention date, Feb. 8, 1937. [Class 122 (v)] A packing for rotary shafts extending through the casings of electrical machines is constituted by a substantially flat washer 1 of rubber or other elastic material, the diameter 2 being smaller than the diameter of the shaft 4 so that when applied the washer takes a conoidal form. The washer 13 may have a conical hole 14 and radial splits 15 whereby the parts 18 take up different conoidal angles, and contact with the shaft at 19, 20, 21. Preferably, the washer has an outside diameter less than the pitch circle of the bolts 12 which, in co-operation with a disc 11, hold said washer in a cup member 7. If desired, the inner edge may be pressed against the shaft by a coned washer subjected to spring pressure. The ratio of the diameter at the aperture in the packing to the diameter of the shaft is substantially 15 to 25 or 16 to 25. More than one such washer may be employed.
