Abstract

A scroop finish is imparted to artificial silk fabric by depositing thereon a small proportion of a water-insoluble higher aliphatic ester of a polyhydric alcohol or of a higher acyclic monohydric alcohol. The ester is preferably deposited on the fabric from a solution in an organic solvent, e.g. benzene or carbon tetrachloride, the weight of the deposit being 0,05--2,5 per cent. of the weight of the fabric; or from an aqueous dispersion, together with glue and a wetting agent which does not contain a long aliphatic chain, e.g. alkyl naphthalene sulphonic acid. The higher fatty acids employed contain at least 8 carbon atoms, e.g. tri-stearin, coconut oil, palm kernel oil or the higher saturated fatty acid glycerides contained therein, e.g. tri-laurin, tri-palmitin and tri-myristin; glycol di-stearate and di-ethylene glycol di-stearate are also suitable. Suitable higher acyclic monohydric alcohols are those containing at least 8 carbon atoms, e.g. lauryl, stearyl, and cetyl alcohols. In an example, 100 gms. of beef fat or spermaceti wax are melted and poured into 100 ccs. water containing 50 gms. glue and 10 gms. of the wetting-agent sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Nekal A." and stirred; the whole is then mechanically emulsified and made up to 1 litre with water. A dyed fabric containing cellulose acetate yarns is immersed in a 2,5 per cent solution of the above emulsion, hydroextracted so that it retains 40 per cent of its weight of liquid, dried and finished. Specifications 407,449; 424,683, 424,752, 424,830, and 424,879, [all in Group IX], are referred to.
