[Class 28 (i)] [See also Group V] Apparatus for the production of cattle and poultry food &c. comprises in combination a steam-jacketed cooker fitted with agitators or an interrupted worm for kneading and mixing the meal and molasses or like materials into a homogeneous plastic mass, a steam-jacketed or other rotary worm press into which the plastic mixture is delivered to be compressed and extruded through a perforated die plate, and means associated with the die plate for severing the material into granules or pellets as it is extruded, the agitators and the press worm being mounted on a common spindle or shaft. The cooker consists of a steam-jacketed hopper or casing 1 provided with the rotary interrupted worm or agitators 2 for mixing and kneading the materials and feeding the plastic mass through outlets 3 into a rotary worm press 4. The agitators 2 and the press worm 6 may be heated by steam passed through the tubular shaft 8 on which they are both mounted and which is driven by bevel gearing 10. Steam may be injected into the materials through injector pipes 5 or through the agitators 2. The steam jacket 12 may be extended to surround the press 4. The agitators 2 and the press worm 6 may be of different or varying pitch. As the material issues from the interchangeable die plate 7 it is cut up by a rotary knife 9 mounted on or driven from the shaft 8. The supply of plastic material from the cooker to the press is controlled by means of valves 3<x> which are adapted to give a continuously variable outlet or to be adjusted selectively to bring into use any one or more of a number of outlet apertures of different sizes. After the first charge has been properly heated, mixed, and kneaded the feeding and dischage may be continuous. The cooker may be arranged to discharge into different presses, the worms of which may all be mounted on the same shaft.
