Abstract
Crude hydrocarbons such as coke oven benzol, are purified by treatment with maleic acid or anhydride. Crude benzol is refluxed with 1 to 3 per cent of maleic acid anhydride, and the purified oil is separated by distillation. Further purification by treatment with sodium hydroxide or carbonate may be employed. The process may be applied to hydrocarbons before or after the removal of sulphur compounds as described in Specifications 315,439, [Class 91, Oils &c.], and 333,511, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.]. The treatment removes such impurities as cyclo-pentadiene, butadiene, and heterocyclic compounds such as pyridine. By crystallizing from benzene, the residue obtained from the purification of crude benzol, there is obtained methylene tetra hydro phthalic acid anhydride. The residue may be esterified with a polyvalent alcohol such as glycerol to form a resin.ALSO:Crude hydrocarbons such as coke oven benzol are treated with maleic acid or anhydride, whereby impurities such as cyclopentadiene, butadiene, and heterocyclic bases such as pyridine, are removed. The residue obtained by treating crude benzol with maleic acid anhydride is crystallized from benzene whereupon methylene tetrahydrophthalic acid anhydride separates out. The crude residue may be esterified with a polyvalent alcohol such as glycerol to form a resin.
