Abstract

311,085. Austerweil, G. May 2, 1928. Borncol is obtained by heating nopinene with an organic acid anhydride and slowly adding alcohol to produce nascent organic acid which reacts with the nopinene to form a bornyl ester. The process can be carried out under pressure and preferably in the presence of a solvent, such as toluene, xylene, or pinene, which does not react with the nascent acid. Example :-Nopinene and phthalic anhydride dissolved in pinene or xylene are heated to 145‹ C. and ethyl alcohol is added drop by drop. The mass is further heated under a reflux condenser and is then cooled and poured into a solution of sodium carbonate. After driving off the solvents from the upper layer a residue of bornyl-ethyl-phthalate is obtained from which borneol is obtained by saponification. The alcohol may be recovered by saponification and distillation and phthalic anhydride may be recovered from the sodium phthalate by treatment with mineral acid and heating the phthalic acid so obtained.
