Abstract

Cyclic hydrocarbons are obtained by treating phenols in an autoclave with finely divided or spongy iron and water at a temperature of the order of or above 400 DEG C., the amount of water presence being such that pressures of the order of 200 atmospheres or above are developed. When higher homologues of phenol are treated products resembling terpene hydrocarbons are obtained. When pure phenol is treated, in addition to cyclo paraffins, condensation products are produced, the product boiling above 360 DEG C. being suitable as a lubricant. Gaseous hydrocarbons are also formed. The formation of condensation products may be prevented by admixture with the phenols of other oils, preferably such as are obtained by or are capable of hydrogenation, for example, tar oils or their hydrogenation products. Materials containing cresols obtained from brown coal or brown coal generator tar may be used as starting materials. In an example cresol is heated for an hour with water and finely divided iron in an autoclave, at 450-470 DEG C., the product containing 30-40 per cent of hydrocarbons boiling up to 180 DEG C.
