Abstract
327,451. Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., Murphy, E. A., and Twiss, D. F. Jan. 5, 1929. Latex, treating.-Aqueous dispersions of rubber &c. are coagulated to a crumb-like or powdery form by the addition of fillers which have been dispersed in the presence, of a protective colloid and by the subsequent addition of the same or other fillers in quantity sufficient to lower the anti-coagulant effect of the colloid. Fillers for the first stage are gas black, clay. amorphous silica and whiting, for the second stage any of the above or oxides of zinc calcium or magnesium. The protective colloids chosen may be such as have a softening effect on the crumb, e.g. salts of the higher fatty acids such as ammonium oleate resinate &c. The crumb-like product mav be dried pressed and used directly to form leather-like compositions which contain very large amounts of fillers, e.g. 3 of gas black to 2 of rubber, or it may be used in the manner of mother stocks as a ready way of milling gas black &c. into rubber.
