Abstract
269,058. Kiel, C. A. Sept. 22,1926. Joints. - A ball-and-socket joint comprises a ball member 1, having a substantially spherical body 4 and a neck 5, an integral one-piece socket 2, cast about the said body 4 and having a chilled metal seat 15, and a cap member 3, screwed upon the neck 5 of the ball member and having its interior surface in contact with the exterior surface of the socket member. The ball 1 is first cast or moulded and its exterior surface is then machined, after which it is used to form the core of the socket mould. An annular space is left between the body 4 of the ball and the wall of the mould of a width corresponding to the seating surface 15, and when the molten steel is poured into the mould a portion of the metal will fill the space and coming into contact with the cold body 4 will be instantly chilled. The ball and socket members are next ground together and the exterior of the socket member then machined. The joint is completed by the cap 3 which has a split neck 20 capable of being contracted to secure it against rotation. A part 8 of the bore of the ball member is of square section for the reception of a. wrench so as to enable the cap 3 to be adjusted, while the cap may be provided with a connection for the introduction of a lubricant.
