Abstract

A motor vehicle windscreen visor extension comprising a first portion (2) capable of being attached to the visor e.g. by means of adhesive pads (4), and a second portion (1) hinged to the first portion and adapted to form a lateral extension to the visor. Preferably the hinge between the first and second portions is of a kind in which the portions can be separated and connected by a snap-action, the arrangement being such that the second portion can be fixed to the first portion in either of its two possible positions. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Windscreen visors The invention relates to anti-glare visors for the windscreens of motor vehicles.
Such visors have been conventional on motor vehicles for many years although known visors are not entirely satisfactory in preventing glare, e.g. from the headlights of on-coming vehicles or from the sun, from dazzling the driver. In an attempt to make such visors more versatile it is known for them to be pivotable not only about a horizontal axis between operative and inoperative positions, but also about a vertical axis so that the visor can be swung around to prevent unwanted light from entering the vehicle from the driver's side window.
It is an object of the invention to provide a more efficient visor of the kind described in an attempt to improve driver comfort and to reduce the likelihood of accidents due to dazzle.
According to the invention there is provided an extension for a motor vehicle windscreen visor comprising a first portion capable of being attached to the visor and a second portion hinged to the first portion and adapted to form a lateral extension to the visor.
From another aspect the invention provides a motor vehicle windscreen visor formed with a hinged lateral extension.
If desired both opposite lateral extremeties of a visor may be extended. Where an extension is provided it is preferably adapted to be fitted to either lateral margin of an existing visor. For this purpose the hinge between the first and second portions may if desired be of a kind in which the portions can be separated and connected by a snap-action, so that the second portion can be fixed to the first portion in either of its two possible positions.
The first portion is preferably attached to the visor by means of an adhesive, and advantageously this may be achieved by means of double sided adhesive pads.
Preferably the visor extension is moulded from plastics and preferably the second portion is formed with a surrounding flanged edge.
The invention is diagrammatically illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 illustrates a motor vehicle windscreen visor extension in which the first and second portions, which are hinged together along one edge, are folded one over the other into a retracted position; Figure 2 is a view of the windscreen visor extension of Fig. 1 in an extended position; Figure 3 is a scrap cross-sectional view on the line A-A of Fig. 2, and Figure 4 shows how the windscreen visor extension can be used to extend an existing motor vehicle windscreen visor.
In the drawings a windscreen visor extension for a motor vehicle comprises first and second substantially flat portions referenced 2 and 1 respectively moulded from a plastics material. The portion 1 is substantially rectangular in shape, but with one of the shorter sides disposed at an angle to the other short side which is disposed at right angles to the two mutually parallel long sides. The portion 2 is substantially triangular in shape. Both portions are formed with rounded corners in the interests of safety. Furthermore the marginal edge of the portion 1 is formed with a surrounding beaded edge 5 as can best be seen in Fig. 3. The two portions are united by means of a hinge comprising a pair of fingers 6 on the portion 1 which engage with a snap action in a corresponding groove 7 in the member 2.Thus the portions can be folded between the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and will remain in those positions and in any intermediate position to which the portions are set by the friction in the hinge. The hinge is arranged so that the portions can be seperated and the portion 1 re-attached after invertion from the position shown in Fig. 2 so that the extension can be adjusted to suit different conditions and can be attached to either extremity of an existing motor vehicle windscreen visor 8 as indicated in Fig. 4. When not required the second portion of the extension can be folded over the visor proper so that the visor can itself be folded away in the normal way.
The extension is attached to the visor 8 by means of three double sided adhesive pads 4 disposed in the corners of the portion 2. The pads are conveniently located within surrounding flanges 3, although this is by no means essential.

4. An extension according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the first portion is attached to the visor by means of an adhesive.
5. An extension according to any preceding claim, and moulded from a plastics material and wherein the second portion is formed with a surrounding flanged edge.

Such visors have been conventional on motor vehicles for many years although known visors are not entirely satisfactory in preventing glare, e.g. from the headlights of on-coming vehicles or from the sun, from dazzling the driver. In an attempt to make such visors more versatile it is known for them to be pivotable not only about a horizontal axis between operative and inoperative positions, but also about a vertical axis so that the visor can be swung around to prevent unwanted light from entering the vehicle from the driver's side window. It is an object of the invention to provide a more efficient visor of the kind described in an attempt to improve driver comfort and to reduce the likelihood of accidents due to dazzle. According to the invention there is provided an extension for a motor vehicle windscreen visor comprising a first portion capable of being attached to the visor and a second portion hinged to the first portion and adapted to form a lateral extension to the visor. When not required the second portion of the extension can be folded over the visor proper so that the visor can itself be folded away in the normal way. The pads are conveniently located within surrounding flanges 3, although this is by no means essential. CLAIMS
1. A motor vehicle windscreen visor extension comprising a first portion capable of being attached to the visor and a second portion hinged to the first portion and adapted to form a lateral extension to the visor.
2. An extension according to claim 1, and adapted to be fitted to either lateral margin of an existing visor.
3. An extension according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the hinge between the first and second portions is of a kind in which the portions can be separated and connected by a snap-action, the arrangement being such that the second portion can be fixed to the first portion in either of its two possible positions.
4. An extension according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the first portion is attached to the visor by means of an adhesive.
5. An extension according to any preceding claim, and moulded from a plastics material and wherein the second portion is formed with a surrounding flanged edge.
6. A motor vehicle windscreen visor extension substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as illustrated in, the accompanying drawings.
7. A motor vehicle windscreen visor formed with a hinged lateral extension.
8. A motor vehicle windscreen visor according to claim 7, wherein both opposite lateral extremities of the visor are formed with hinged lateral extensions.
