Abstract

206,081. Western Electric Go., Ltd., (Western Electric Co., Inc.). March 3, 1923. Vacuum tubes; low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus.-A Braun or like tube has a cathode arranged out of alignment with an aperture in an anode so as to prevent bombardment of the cathode by positive ions. As shown the cathode consists of the strip bent to form a ring 15 of the same diameter as the aperture within a tubular anode 13. A plate 12 with an aperture may be interposed between the electrodes to provide additional protection for the cathode. The cathode rays pass through the anode and impinge on a fluorescent screen composed of preferably equal parts of calcium tungstate or similar material emitting blue light under fluorescence, and of zinc silicate or sulphate emitting green light, the mixture being held on the wall of the tube by a binder such as water glass. Such a screen may be employed for visual or photographic work on alternating current wave forms. The tube may contain gas or vapour such as mercury vapour at a pressure of one or two microns.
