Abstract

14,171. Pattison, J. S., and Burn, L. Oct. 6. Sweeping-machines; taking up refuse for removal.-Relates to road-sweeping machines of the kind having a pair of transverse rotary brushes sweeping into the trough of a conveyer located between them, the refuse being directed towards the path of the transverse brushes by one or more inclined rotary brushes. According to the invention, the front transverse brush, or alternatively a paddle or scoop wheel, is arranged between the inclined brush or brushes and the conveyer so as to deal with the bulk of the sweepings, the refuse which escapes being acted upon by the rear transverse brush. Fig. 1 shows a sweeper connected by parallel-motion links d to the rear of a dust-carrying vehicle c. The axle h of the wheels b of the sweeper supports a frame a, which carries one or more front inclined rotary brushes e, and a pair of transverse brushes f, g, which both deliver to the boot q of a conveyer p arranged between them. The brush g extends beyond the brush f and is intended to take up the refuse which escapes beneath and at the ends of this brush. An operator seated at o can raise the frame o carrying the brushes, by turning a wheel m which actuates a transverse shaft provided with worms j, which rotate nuts engaging with screw spindles i bearing at each end of the axle. The inclined brushes are driven by spur gearing s<1>, s<2>, s<3> from the wheel b at one side of the machine, and the transverse brushes and conveyer are driven through a chain wand sprockets x by spur gearing v<1>, v<2> from the wheel b at the other side. By raising the frame a, the driving-gears of the brushes are disengaged from the road wheels. The conveyer p delivers at its upper end on to a travelling band r, which discharges into the vehicle c. In a modification, in which the sweeper is trailed behind a motor-vehicle, the brushes are driven from a cardan shaft forming an extension of the propeller shaft of the vehicle.
