Packing, non-metallic; stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-Ball-and-socket joints for discharge pipes of suction dredgers, in which the spigot is connected to the socket by a gimbal ring and eyebolts, and in which an annular groove is provided in the socket for the reception of suitable packing, are characterized by the provision of a metal ring h between the packing-ring G and the set-screws I which serve to compress the packing. The packing may be of wood, say elm, or of rope tanned with cutch.
