Abstract
Hydrocarbon oils are obtained by the dry distillation at atmospheric pressure of alkali, alkaline earth, or metal soaps. Ketones, aldehydes, and gas suitable for fuel purposes also pass over, and metal oxides or carbonates remain. It is preferred to use the soda soaps, with or without excess of alkali, for example the residues from the alkali refining of fish oil or soya bean oil. Examples are given of the distillation at 400-550 DEG C. of soaps made from soda and fish oil, soda and tallow, lime and tallow, and zinc and tallow, iron retorts being used. Potash and magnesium soaps are also specified. The proportion of light hydrocarbons may be increased by mixing iron or nickel scraps, or a metallic oxide or chloride such as ferric oxide, nickel oxide, or aluminium chloride, with the soaps to act as catalyzers during the distillation.ALSO:Hydrocarbon oils are obtained by the dry distillation at atmospheric pressure of alkali, alkaline earth, or metal soaps.
