Abstract

1502423 Light guides COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS Ltd 10 March 1975 [12 March 1974] 10861/74 Heading G2J A device for coupling the output of a light source 1 to an optical fibre or bundle of fibres 2, comprises a body of transparent material, e.g. glass, formed from two or more solid parts 3, 4 and having two cavities 8, 9 for positioning the source and the fibre, the part 3 having a reflective surface 12 for directing light through the body towards the fibre. In use, the parts are adhered or clamped together, and an index-matching material may be provided between the parts or in the cavities. The source 1 is arranged so that all the light emitted is directed towards the surface 12. The body is preferably ellipsoidal, the source 1 and end-face 10 of the fibres 2 being located at the focii of the ellipsoid. The part 4 may be frustro-conical. The arrangement is such that adjustment of the relative portions of the two parts enables the image of the source to be focussed on the end of the fibres. In one modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the part 4 supports a plano-convex lens (13) at the end adjacent the part 3, the lens having a refractive index less than that of glass, e.g. made of polymethylmethacrylate. In a second modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) the lens (13) is convex, one face mating with a concavity in the part 3.
