Abstract
1454496 Glazing ceramics FERRANTI Ltd 11 Feb 1974 [30 Nov 1972] 55387/72 Heading C1M A ceramic body, having at least a surface layer having an alumina or beryllia content of at least 85% by weight, is glazed by coating the surface with a glaze composition comprising silica, at least one alkaline earth metal oxide (e.g. CaO or MgO), possibly incidental impurities, and, optionally, alumina or beryllia (the same as in the ceramic), in relative proportions such that on firing a (silica-alkaline earth metal oxide-alumina or beryllia) eutectic mixture is formed, heating the coated body to at least the eutectic point to form a molten glaze comprising the eutectic composition, and cooling to form a glazed body. The coating composition may itself contain Al 2 O 3 or BeO, but preferably Al 2 O 3 or BeO is transferred from the ceramic into the coating during the firing, which may be in hydrogen at 1200-1450‹ C. The coating composition may also comprise B 2 O 3 and/or K 2 O, and may comprise a refractory metal (e.g. Mo or W). When Mo is present, Mn powder may also be present. The refractory metal may constitute 30% by volume of the coating composition. Preferably the coating composition is such that at least 95% of the particles are of size 5-10 microns. The applied coating is preferably of thickness 60-100 microns. In examples, a ceramic comprising 88% by weight alumina is coated with (1) a composition comprising (by weight) 25% MgO and 75% SiO 2 , to give a eutectic of composition 20À3% MgO, 61À4% SiO 2 and 18À3% Al 2 O 3 (eutectic point 1355‹ C.); and (2) a composition comprising (by weight) 27À2% CaO and 72À8% SiO 2 , to give a eutectic of composition 23À3% CaO, 62À1% SiO 2 and 14À6% Al 2 O 3 (eutectic point 1170‹ C.).
