Abstract

1428849 Catamenial appliances PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 17 May 1973 [17 May 1972] 23562/73 Heading A5R A catamenial appliance comprises an absorbent body 21 which is an agglomerate of pieces 22 of cellular absorptive material, and a flexible fluid-permeable overwrap 23 encasing the absorbent body, the overwrap being so constructed that when the appliance is disposed of in water at least one aperture is formed therein through which the pieces may pass. The overwrap may be tubular a withdrawal string 24 being secured to one end and the other end being gathered and secured by a waterfrangible adhesive. A side seam 26 may also be secured by an adhesive. The adhesive is preferably such that it is insoluble at temperatures above 85‹F but soluble in water at temperature of 70‹F or below. In a modification an end portion of the overwrap is folded over into the absorbent body and extends at least as far as the midpoint of the appliance whereby a cavity is formed. This end portion may be sealed by adhesive or be left unsealed. The folded-over portion may extend completely through the appliance. In a further modification both end portions of the overwrap are folded over into the centre of the appliance.
