Abstract

1402557 Femoral prostheses CHAS F THACKRAY Ltd 19 July 1972 [9 Aug 1971] 37247/ 71 Heading A5R A femoral prosthesis 1 having a shaft 2, a neck 3 and a head 4, has a removable protective sheath 5 of material softer than its prosthesis 1, the sheath being substantially incompressible and having an inner surface portion, complementary to the shape of the neck 3 and an outer surface portion 6 which is of substantially circular or regular polygonal cross-section transverse to the length of the sheath, the sheath having a plurality of parts, said parts having surfaces which mate with one another, said mating surfaces lying in planes radial to the longitudinal axis of the sheath. The sheath may be formed with grooves or holes from the outer to the inner surface to facilitate sterilizing the prosthesis 1 with the sheath in place. The parts of the sheath may be held together by pegs fitting in mating holes or by a band around the outer surface. The sheath may he made of, for example, polyvinylchloride or polyamide and its outer surface may be patterned or include inserts of high friction material, such as rough metal, to facilitate gripping of the sheath 5 in a punch 7 for inserting the prosthesis. The punch comprises arms 8, having head parts 9 pivoted together about axis 10 and provided with semi-cylindrical recesses to receive surface 6. The arms 8 are secured together by a threaded stem 11 having a knurled wheel 13 to grip the sheath in parts 9 with the arms 8 parallel to shaft 2, which is then inserted into the femoral canal by driving arms 8 in the required direction.
