Abstract
1396745 Cutting apparatus S G ANDERSSON 16 Aug 1972 [20 Aug 1971 (2)] 38283/72 Heading B4B Apparatus comprising a series of identical knives for making parallel cuts in a web of material, e.g. textile, comprises means to adjust the spacing between knives simultaneously while retaining equal distances between them, the means including wires, one for each knife holder, to draw the holder along a mounting shaft, the wires running parallel to the shaft to adjustment means to one side of the cutting area. The knives may be circular and co-operate with at least one backing roller. In the embodiment described, knife holders 28 carrying discs 3 are slideable along parallel shafts 27, Fig. 8, on either side of a central fixed knife holder, the latter being secured with some freedom for vertical movement to an elongated inverted U-section casing 21 by means 29, Figs. 1, 2. The casing applies cutting load to the knives and bears on the knife holders. The entire series of knives is raisable from a counter roller 4 by toggle means 2, 70, 71 which pivots arms 12, 14 fast on a shaft 1. The arms are joined across the cutting area by rods 18 which pass through clearance holes in end plates 20 of the casing 21. The shafts 27 are secured in the arms and also pass through clearance holes in the end plates 20, the latter pivoting about the shaft 1. When the toggle means operates to swing up the arms 12, 14, Fig. 1, the weight of the casing 21 is taken up by the rods 18; the casing 21 moving in advance of the holders 28 which are then raised by their shafts 27. Thus the holders 28 are brought clear of the counter roller 4 and relieved of the weight of the casing 21 so that they may slide freely during adjustment. Each knife holder includes an inner assembly 30 in which the blade 3 is mounted, Fig. 4, and an outer assembly 38 which is suspended from the rods 27. The inner assembly has slots 33 receiving a rod 47 secured on the side plates of the outer member and is pivoted about this rod into a downwardly projecting active position by eccentric lever means 37 against a spring element 35. Thus individual knives may be rendered inactive by raising the lever means 37 and permitting the spring 35 to pivot them upwards. The knife holder groups on either side of the central holder are adjustable each by a lever 84, 85, Figs. 1, 2, 8, pivoted to the machine frame at 86 and having connected to it at spaced intervals from the pivot, wires 75 joined one to each holder 28. Wires for holders spaced from the lever by other holders pass through holes 40, Fig. 4, on the intervening holders. When the lever 84, 85 is moved clockwise, Fig. 8, the holders are drawn along the rods 27 by distances corresponding to the distance of the connection 88 of the respective wire from the pivot. The lever 84, 85 on each side of the machine operates within a casing 72, Fig. 1. Springs, not shown, join anchorages such as 64, Fig. 4, on the adjustable holders to the central holder to return them towards the closed up position of Fig. 2. A machine mayhave a single series of knives, instead of two series as above, and/or rotatable adjustment means in lieu of a lever. Knives other than circular knives may be used, (not detailed).
