1355211 Button sewing machines ENTERPRISE MACHINE & DEVELOPMENT CORP 16 Sept 1971 [23 Sept 1970] 43334/71 Heading D1G A button feeding and positioning device in a button sewing machine having a pair of opposed clamping jaws 20a, 20b urged together by a spring 22 and mounted on a support arm 23 which is pivoted to the machine frame, a rod 31 for lifting and lowering the arm 23 from and to a fabric workpiece, comprises an elongate button transfer plate 35 secured to and spaced below the arm 23 and having a button receiving opening 36a, means 54 for supplying successive buttons to the plate 35, a pusher plate 40 and a ram 50 for moving the pusher plate 40 in response to lowering of the arm 23 when starting a sewing cycle to push the leading button into the opening 36a, a transfer arm 60 with button locating pins 62, means 85 to rotate a button into alignment with the pins 62 and a ram 67 responsive to raising of the arm 23 to move the transfer arm 60 forwardly to engage the leading button with the jaws 20a, 20b at the end of the sewing cycle and displace the sewn button. The pins 62 are pivoted downwardly to release the button when a pin 72 (Fig. 8) in a block 71 on a rod 64 secured to the arm 60 reaches the end of a plunger 77 which is supported from the plate 35 and the rod is pivoted by a leaf spring 80. On withdrawing of the transfer arm 60 the pin 72 returns the plunger and rides up a cam surface 76 to pivot the rod 64 and arm 60 to receive another button. The pusher 40 and transfer arm 60 are moved by respective pneumatic rams 50 and 67 controlled by valves 100, 101 actuated by an arm 104 extending from the arm 23. The valves 100, 101 supply the rams through respective pilot valves (115), (123) (Fig. 11, not shown) which cut off the air supply to the rams after a time delay so that they retract independently of the sewing cycle. The button rotating means comprises a wheel 85 (Fig. 6) rotated by an impeller 90 and mounted in an arm 92 which is pivoted about its middle by a roller 93 which is movable with the pusher 40. The impeller is supplied with air through holes in a pipe 91a and a block 53b which align as the wheel 85 is lowered. Thus as the pusher 40 is returned the wheel 85 is lowered onto the new button and is spun to rotate the button.
